Poker Hand Rankings Explained: Know Every Winning Poker Hand

Whether you’re a rookie just learning to play or a seasoned player looking to assess your skills, understanding poker hand rankings is essential. Every winning plan starts with knowing which hands are strong and which are weak, and how they compare against each other.

Hand Rankings

Texas Hold 'em

In Texas Hold’em, each player is served with two hold cards and it is required to be combined with the best three out of five community cards. Unlike Omaha, players can also use any combination of their hole cards and the community cards - both hole cards, one hole card or even just the five community cards on the table.

The poker hand rankings in Texas Hold’em are similar to that of Omaha, ranging from Royal Flush, down to the High Card. But because players have only two hole cards , strong hands such as Foll House, Four of a Kind and Straight Flushes happen less often when compared to Omaha.

Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO)

In Pot-Limit Omaha, each player receives four hole cards instead of the regular two. To make a hand, players must use exactly two of their hole cards and three community cards out of the usual five. This is the most vital rule in Omaha and often forms a situation that differs from Texas Hold’em.

The distribution of cards generally is identical for Texas and Omaha. It is listed below from highest to lowest:

1. Royal Flush

The Royal Flush is the strongest possible hand in Omaha and is extremely rare.
It consists of the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten of the same suit, using exactly two hole cards and three board cards.
Example: A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠

2. Straight Flush

A Straight Flush contains five consecutive cards of the same suit.
If multiple players hold a Straight Flush, the highest-ranking Straight Flush wins.
Example: 9♥ 8♥ 7♥ 6♥ 5♥

3. Four of a Kind

Four cards of the same rank form a Four of a Kind. The higher set of four cards wins when players hold different quads.Example: A♣ A♦ A♥ A♠ K♣

4. Full House

A Full House consists of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank.
The higher three-of-a-kind determines the winning Full House.Example: K♠ K♥ K♦ 9♣ 9♦

5. Flush

A Flush is made up of five cards of the same suit that are not consecutive.
If multiple players have a Flush, the highest card in the Flush determines the winner.
Example: A♦ J♦ 10♦ 6♦ 3♦

6. Straight

A Straight contains five consecutive cards of mixed suits.
The highest card in the sequence determines the stronger Straight.
Example: J♣ 10♦ 9♠ 8♥ 7♣

7. Three of a Kind

Three cards of the same rank form a Three of a Kind.
Higher triplets beat lower triplets.
Example: Q♣ Q♦ Q♠ 10♥ 4♣

8. Two Pair

Two Pair consists of two different pairs.
The highest pair is compared first, followed by the second pair.
Example: A♠ A♦ J♣ J♥ 8♠

9. One Pair

One Pair is formed when two cards share the same rank.
Higher pairs beat lower pairs.
Example: K♠ K♦ Q♣ 9♥ 4♠

10. High Card

When no player makes any of the above hands, the highest individual card determines the winner.
An Ace-high hand beats a King-high hand.
Example: A♣ J♦ 9♠ 7♣ 4♥
